1886년 3월, 빈센트는 아카데미를 떠나 파리로 이사한다. 파리 체류 기간 동안 빈센트는 새롭고 다양한 인상들에 노출되었다. 그 자신의 작업에서 실험의 시기가 시작되었으며, 그 실험은 궁극적으로 그의 화법에 중대한 변화로 귀결되었다. 파리에서 그는 그 당시에 중요하게 간주되었던 인상주의와 대면하게 되었다. 그는 인상주의의 여러 요소를 자신의 회화에 받아들였다. 그는 좀 더 밝고 순수한 색채를 사용했고, 가는 선으로 그은 듯한, 점 모양의 특징을 지닌 붓 놀림으로 넘어갔다. 그러면서 그는 화면을 보색 관계를 이루는 색채로 구성했다.
